I have tried yoga when I had to deal with postpartum depression the second time:
I can categorize my second pregnancy and the time after it as the most challenging time of my life. It had not just drained me physically but also mentally. I was torn between looking after a five-year-old who was only beginning at school and a toddler that could cry endlessly and not sleep through his night.
It was overwhelmingly difficult but thank god for yoga:
My sister in law practiced yoga for years and she was the one who noticed the signs of my depression early on even before the signs were really prominent. She began helping me with my breathing and also suggested that I go for a brisk walk and some yoga asana that will help me fight stress and get back to normalcy faster.
In the meantime, the kind soul even offered to babysit!
I cannot thank her enough because taking my mind away from the drudgery of a crying baby and housework coupled with tons of homework that came from school and doing correct breathing and stretches helped soothe my nerves.
Snatching a few minutes from your routine to mindfully do yoga will not hurt anyone:
The benefits are immense! Doing yoga regularly can increase the amount of GABA or the Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid. This is a neurotransmitter in the brain that is responsible for normalizing brain activities in times of stress, anxiety, and fear.
Over the months of doing yoga, casually at first and then seriously helped me tide over the overwhelming stressed out feeling and let me experience bliss. Can you even believe that I was housing suicidal thoughts when I just could not cope with all the stress? Thank s to yoga; I have totally cut out the negative thoughts. I look forward to each day with positive zeal.
